TenNEWTpanel in the Sand, part 1

"Mrugrumpppfffmuffleglum.."
____________________________

From the incessant yapper, Doug Tennapel:

The 9/11 Commission is another complete waste of time. Who exactly could have predicted that 20 men could take over 4 jets with box-cutters and knock down two sky-scrapers and the Pentagon?! Who is at fault for this? I've talked to the people who think Clinton could have stopped it. Impossible. There is such a thing as an unforeseeable event.

Bush could not stop one death with Katrina, nor can he stop every terrorist attack that's coming down the pipe nor can he perfectly respond to hurricanes. This is not because people are black, it's because we live in a sequential universe.

It was perhaps unspecified, but the Bush Administration had intelligence on possible terrorist attacks in this way. That is a well know FACT. No emotion. Simple fact.

Living in a "sequential universe" means responding to a natural disaster in a sequential manner.

You are the commander-in-chief and you know two days ahead of time that a potential disaster is mounting. Sequence One. You prepare.

You study the ten years of warnings and make sure FEMA is ready to respond in case (in case) what is predicted happens. Sequence Two. You plan ahead.

When the storm hits and does an unbelievable amount of devastation you move with the resources of the most advances and capable tools ever possessed by any country at any time. And you move NOW. Sequence three.

If your FEMA director only knows how to breed Arabian horses, you turn it over to the military. You make a decision, not sit there on your ranch and vacation another day or so (or blink twice and keep reading a kids book). Sequence Four.

You do not divert much needed military equipment to "look presidential" at press conferences when you could actually "be presidential" instead. Sequence Five.

When you fuck up, or your administration does, you take responsibility and do not blame those who are drowning and fighting for their lives...Especially if you are from the "accountability" administration (that takes responsibility for NOTHING). Sequence Six.

If we live in a "sequential universe" then this administration will be held accountable for its incompetence in due time.

Doug & Co do not want that. They want accountability for everyone else...then cry "oh no blaming!" when it suits them. Sorry boys.

He who lives by the blame dies by the blame.

i just can't fathom that Bush was vacationing and seeing all this and people in such despair dieing and starving! And staying on vacation.

If Anyone of us were sitting at home and had the means to help we would. Most of us (if not all) if we could would have been in New Orleans in a heartbeat! How could you not!!

But to enjoy a 'well deserved' vacation and letting things go along is beyond my comprehension.

Whenever i found out that a truckload of water was sent by walmart for the people and they were turned away by FEMA for 'lack of paperwork' really pissed me off! Just take the name social security number of the driver and who he is working for and let him through!!!

Well, he obviously was on a vacation of some sorts since there were people in dispair and he 'continued on as usual'?

He should have been there a day after the levee broke. But he wasn't, why? That is a good question.

By the way I do not disagree with you concerning the governor and mayor.

yet, for the President to go along as usual was a vacation. he certainly wasn't ready to deal with a crisis.

The people suffereing were ignored. That is obvious.

Fascinating how folks weren't sent to Texas till the president finished his 'vacation'

I am aware of the stupidity of Governor Bianco.

However, when the levee broke and the fact that people were running for thier life and then in Living Color we watch people suffer.

do you THINK that the president could give a call to Governor Bianco and TELL her that unless she askes for assitance of the National Guard he can't do anything?

The ONLY time the president called was after the hurricane in which the Governor expressed that she was 'assessing' the situation. Good enough.

THEN the levee breaks the next day, and nothing from the president to encourage quick response.
Infact the ONLY time something actually got going was after the president visited the disaster areas. You have to admit, things moved quickly after that.
WHY could not do that when the levee broke?

I would appreciate it if you don't assume i don't know how the govermental process works. I DO know and i also know a nudge from the president was in order, however he didn't do it!

I am going as far to admit that Bush has some really sucky advisors and that he relies on these advisors to much.
I am willing to give Bush the 'gut feeling' that he should do this/that but his advisors may have expressed different. In this case he should of gone with his gut.

*SIGH* i am well aware of the evacuation in New Orleans before the Hurricane.
But, people chose to stay. Unless you want people bodily removed(which is ilegal)there are going to be people who will 'ride it out' Understanding of consequences perhaps. They been through others before, they survived.

So, now you want to tell me they deserved to suffer because of thier choice? I see busses underneath water that could be used, were they? No.

Now, the hurricane comes and goes, for all practical purposes New Orleans is cool. Until, the levee breaks. Whole new story is unfolding.

Ummm. as for your expressing close contact, 'days' after, i suggest you think differently. My husband who is quite the republican and is a Bush supporter, expresses from his viewing information through reading articles and other media, that did not happen, and he is quite unhappy about the President being silent. The levee broke and the presient hung out.
Please do not downsize the fact that the president is watching people suffering and he just sits in Crawford doing his usual business.

A president can indeed visit places and asses himself.

Please stop making the president smell like a rose, because he don't. There is blame on him. He didn't care or he listened to his stupid advisors who didn't have a clue.
At lease i am willing to lean towards the latter.

Missippi and Alabama do deserve just as much coverage, however, there didn't seem to be people in dispair longing for food and water in the capcity that New Orleans had.

They lost everything themselves, yes, and that is to be reported on.

Yet, when you here of rape, and people peeing thier pants out of fear to go out of the area bcause they hear of rape and killing and dead bodies in the halls, is quite different.

This was inhumane conditions and if the president cared to see the whole thing himself, the day after, there would have been quicker response.

Don't play the Governor and Mayor card.

Bottom line, Bush didn't asses anything until 4 days after the levee broke, KNOWING people were in inhumane conditons. He should have been there the day after the levee broke!

Yes, Mississippi and Alabama governors said to the president 'Yes Mr, President we will take Federal help'
and Louisana Governor didn't get it, which should have been a red flag to the president that perhaps he should take a look see himself.

But no didn't happen till 4 days later.

Man, you don't get that all of the government screwed up and is held responsible.
The president screwed up. The governor screwed up too.

BUT, i would think a president who should have good advisors on stuff would be able to give good advice. And the president has got to learn to listen to his gut and take the blows that may come from it.

You don't let people suffer like that!

You know we have a bit of a failure of communcation in this discussion.

I hear you, i understand the process of how states ask for assistance.
I hear you about the governor and the mayor. I understand they both also failed in their particular parts in which to carry out disaster plans.

You don't seem to hear me what i say......

The levee breaks, people are forced to stay at the superdome.

We have a great issue of these people cannot go home for a long time,

they are underwater, it is just about becoming a part of the ocean.

The president sees this,

The president sits at crawford vacationing and carrying out work as usual.

People are suffering,

The president sees this.

The president doesn't come to visit till 4 days later.

People are hungary thirsty and thier basic right to decency (like peeing and pooping) of appropriate facilities supplied.
Have you heard that some people stayed in thier seats and 'did their business' because they were afraid to go anywhere in the superdome for fear of their life?

The president visits 4 days later, he saw what we saw and he waited 4 days!.

Something is wrong with that picture.

ALSO.....

It appears that the Governor required her hand being held to figure out what to do.

IF the president just responded by visiting the struck areas the next day,

He could at least let her know what is required to bring people to safety and recieve appropriate care.

Then the Governor would be able to say 'Mr president we need the Federal governments help'

If the President just did his job of managing he would not be under any flack.

Did you happen to notice how things quickly began to get going after the president visited? (4 days late)

Within hours those poor folk at the convention center were evacuated and brought to safety and given back some dignity.

He saw it, he understood the need, he talked to the Governor and then finally help was coming.

They president lacked leadership, i say much of it has to do with his advisors, they are stupid. Which tells me that the president is indecisive (not totaly, yet enough to allow himself to be led in wrong direction. EX. Iraq war, Rhelmsfeld promised him many things and many things failed) and i believe this awful disaster revealed that.

We need dates and your timeline Fusion. You past record tends toward rhetoric not facts. Show you facts and not ideological bullshit.

Everyone agrees that FEMA worked fast and hard in crisis during the Clinton years. Bush's cronyism has left him with no one he can count on. The are utterly incompetent...whether it be FEMA, the EPA or most any other federal agency.

I have no doubt that when Clinton came to office he hired friends for positions. But they were QUALIFIED to some degree. Bush's cronies have no qaulifications at all. What qualifications or experience does Brown have to run FEMA?

This is an argunment as unwinnable as WMD in Bhagdad.

Better to make your case elsewhere.

By the way, we know Nagin was in N.O. because it is when, under extreme duress, he made his famous radio interview.

Love to see your time line and compare it to what actually happened.

Just get the days right.

Fusion uses an old debate tactic. But overstating the opposite position to a ridiculous extreme it looks...er, ridiculously extreme.

No one that I know blames Bush for the hurricane occurence, and the officials down South have been screaming about the levee for a decade, long before Bush came into office. So, Bush did not cause this in any way.

Rather it was poor leadership (from the "leadership government") and a lack of accountability (from an administration that talks so much about it) for catastrophic mistakes that is of such concern.

Goerge is no god-king. If he was he might have been more help. As it is, he is more like a Feudal lord who makes sure all his cronies get all the real food and benefits whether they can perform a service or not.

So when the largest crisis ever in our hostory hits, these idiots have no idea what to do. YOu can see it as their eyes glaze over and they try and make excuses about "when they knew".

Try turning on CNN a day or two earlier numbnuts.

If being a "leftist" means not burying my head in the sand and pretending things are not FUBAR all over, count me in.

One last note...the strategy now being employed by Bush & Co is an old one. It's called "blaming the victim."
